Patient-Centered Design
The New Saint John’s is designed to provide the fastest, most efficient way to deliver clinically advanced life-saving medical care to patients. Room designs create a healing environment for patients while offering comfortable accomdations for family members and guests. The two buildings that make up the New Saint John’s – The Howard Keck Center and Chan Soon-Shiong Center for Life Sciences – were constructed from the patient’s perspective as one complete plan, not a confusing hodge podge of building projects that can make the hospital experience such a challenge for patients, doctors and family members. The two buildings have a combined total of 236 private beds with the capability to expand to 268 beds (including private rooms) during peak seasons.
Focus groups were conducted with former patients, physicians, employees, and governing board and community members to help us better understand patients' needs and wants. Their input was then benchmarked against existing best practices. Hundreds of physicians, nurses, patients and family members were involved in the planning process to develop an optimal design for professional and patient practicalities and comfort. As a result, the hospital provides fast, efficient patient flow and access, while creating a uniquely comfortable, reassuring atmosphere
