Cleft Palate Professional Services

The Cleft Palate Center Team may consist of these professional services:

Plastic Surgery

  • Evaluation of the newborn and consultation with parents and referring pediatrician or family physician
  • Cleft lip and nasal reconstruction and cleft palate repair in infancy
  • Orthognathic surgery, lip and nasal reconstruction, secondary palatal surgery as needed

Pediatric/Adolescent Medicine

  • Intake consultation and medical case management
  • Feeding evaluation and assessment-see nursing
  • Collaboration and continuity of care with the private pediatrician or family physician
  • Collaboration and consultation with subspecialty pediatric services when needed- genetics, cardiology, pulmonology, neurology, endocrine, developmental services
  • Collaboration with social services to assess parents needs and address family concerns

Speech Pathology

  • Infant and toddler speech and language assessment and stimulation program
  • Preschool and school age speech assessment and individual therapy
  • Adult speech and language evaluations and treatment

Audiology

  • Newborn hearing assessment including auditory brainstem studies
  • Complete pediatric and adult audiology evaluations

Otolaryngology

  • Treatment of chronic otitis media including placement of ventilatory tubes
  • Evaluation and treatment of laryngeal problems

Nursing

  • Feeding assessment and recommendations to prevent "failure to thrive syndrome"
  • Parenting skills enhancement and education
  • Community outreach program

Social Work

  • Supportive services for patients, parents and families
  • Single session counseling
  • Information and referral

Psychology

  • Educational assessment
  • Counseling
  • School intervention help
  • Assistance in adolescent adjustment problems
  • Individual and family support programs available

Orthodontics

  • Infant evaluation and treatment of oro-facial clefts with molding devices when indicated
  • Orthodontic evaluation and treatment including preparation for alveolar bone graft and orthognathic surgery

Prosthodontics

Genetics

  • Diagnosis clarification
  • Genetic counseling for recurrence, and prevention
